Shipley & Halmos Spring/Summer 2011

Monday, September 27th, 2010

It’s that time again: Fall! (But apparently the weather didn’t get the message that getting closer to Christmas means the weather’s supposed to get colder.) Layering, layering & more layering is not too far ahead. However in fashion, you must look even farther ahead. It’s time to look ahead to Spring and Summer of 2011. Come on, this won’t be the first time. I know you all have a countdown to when summer will return and school will be on hold for a couple of glorious months. I know I am. However, that’s beside the point.

Here’s a few looks at the Shipley & Halmos Spring/Summer 2011 Ready-to-Wear Men & Women’s collections. This New York-based brand’s Spring/Summer collection is looking good. If you’ve never heard of the brand or the designers, you simply need to know this: “The brand’s designs possess a strong sense of modernity and progression with respect to classic tradition in form and idea.” The clothes really speak for themselves.

You must know why I’m a fan. It’s full of layering! Vibrant colors, breathable fabrics, and layering in the summer, who doesn’t love the idea?

Good Sounds. Good Vibes.

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I am definitely over this seemingly neverending heatwave that’s hit the Bay Area. If I wanted to die from heat exhaustion, I’d live in SoCal. I mean, I love the sun, but the blazing heat and the humidity I could definitely do without. Not to mention, this heat is making wearing any kind of clothes unbearable. If I could, I’d just walk around in my birthday suit. That’s never happening, so now I’ll just have to deal with this crazy weather until my lovely cold weather returns. Trust, I won’t be happy until I see the fog rolling over those hills.

To at least make the weather a bit more bearable, let’s throw it back to Aaliyah’s song “Hot Like Fire.” It’s pretty damn fitting for this heat, wouldn’t you agree?

More Bang For Your Buck

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I recently discovered a new shopping tip you guys might enjoy. Check out this adorable tunic/top I found:

However, since I’m not quite tall enough, it fell at an awkward length. But instead of just tossing it aside and looking for something else, I decided to try it on in a size 3x larger than my normal one. And voila! I got a new dress for the price of a top!

Want more tips?

-Shop in other departments, like the kid’s section.

-Save money and visit your local thrift store.

-And if all else fails, borrow something from a friend or a family member. But don’t forget to ask!

“New” Trend?

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Although Forever 21 is a store known for making countless knock-offs, I’m definitely not one to usually hate (like I’m about to). Let’s be real, Forever 21 may make knock-offs and it may be a disrespect to the original designers, but who can really afford the real deal that costs $439483 except those who use $1′s like toilet paper. I don’t know about you, but I am not made out of money here. I have admiration for the true designers, but I cannot afford the luxurious life and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I’ve definitely got love for Forever 21 with its mostly affordable prices, variety and sometimes good sales racks. However, a recent visit to their website did make me scoff a little bit. On their homepage is a trend alert of mixing “boyish styles with feminine patterns and accessories for that sexy tom boy look.” The first thing that came to mind was, “Really, Forever 21?” Talk about being late in the game. The girly androgynous look has been here for a while now. Oh and also, I wish they’d widen their spectrum of their menswear as womenswear on their site. A flannel is not the only way to achieve the “sexy tom boy look.” Where are my trouser pants, blazers and grandpa sweaters, Forever 21? Come on, step your game up before the masses look elsewhere to achieve this new trend you speak of.

So definitely don’t get me wrong, I’ve still got love for Forever 21. I just wish they’d be more on top of what’s been in fashion and stop calling things that have already been done by plenty a “new” trend. That’s all. Just think of me as a mother disappointed in their child’s behavior.

Good Sounds. Good Vibes.

Nothing like some creative juices to get you inspired to get your week going, right? Choreographer Shaun Evaristo is the epitome and definition of swag in this video. I know you can’t disagree.  His moves and his style are both so simple and sleek, and yet he just has this confidence and swagger about him that would make anyone swoon over him.

Seriously, I just love the choreo he does in this video to Miguel Jontel’s “Sure Thing.” I just felt the need to share, so enjoy!

-Asian American designers are taking the fashion world by storm and we couldn’t be more excited.

-NY Fashion Week has begun but that doesn’t mean we can’t join in on all the fashion fun on the West Coast. Check out The Day Before series which goes behind the scenes to showcase the stressful moments leading up to the big shows from designers such as Alexander Wang and DVF. And don’t forget about FNO in SF tonight.

-We’re craving more leather frocks, boho-chic looks, and cropped sweaters paired with trousers for fall.

-In light of the recent San Bruno fire, be sure to help out in any way you can.

-And we’ll leave you with this dreamy new video from Andy Allo and the 80′s vibe of Jazmine Sullivan’s Holding You Down.

Girl Crush – Solange

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Beyonce is a world class showstopper and diva extraordinaire. There’s no denying her fierce attitude and killer body but in terms of personal style, I’m more of a Solange fan. Solange’s style is so effortless, natural, and free. Although she changes up her style from loud and colorful to simple yet detailed, Beyonce’s little sister always stays true to herself. Check out these adorable pictures of her:

Vintage Fashion Expo

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Okay, so who doesn’t appreciate fashion from way back when? I seriously love looking back at the styles from back in the day to see what was “in style.” It’s so cool to see how things have changed since then and how styles repeat over the years. If you’re anything like me, then you’ll definitely want to take the opportunity to check out the Vintage Fashion Expo coming up in a few weeks in San Francisco. “The Vintage Fashion Expo is the nation’s longest running 2-day vintage clothing show.” (via sfgate.com)

Here’s the details about the event.

When: September 18th-19th
Show Hours: Saturday 10:30 am- 6 pm. Sunday 11-5pm
Early Buy: Sat. 9-10:30 am
Tickets: Early Buy Admission is $20.00. Regular Admission is $10.00.
Where: Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco

I will definitely try to make it out to this event. I’ve never been to it, and I’m kind of sad I’ve only heard about this now! The usual fee is $10 to get in, but students get in for FREE on Sunday with their student ID, so I’ll be hitting up that day. Who doesn’t love free?

If you want more information about the Expo, check out the website. I’m pretty excited. It sounds like it’s about to be pretty epic. Hope you guys check it out too!

Marc Jacob’s Bookmarc Store Now Open

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

It’s official. Marc Jacobs has reopened the former Bibliography Book Store to Bookmarc at the corner of Bleecker and West 11th Street in Manhattan. The worlds first ever Bookmarc sells, not only books (of course), but items such as notebooks, pencils, and special accessories. The store pretty much has the same feel as the special items he sells in his own boutique.

Good Sounds. Good Vibes.

What else is there to say besides M.I.A. is the shit? I love how she embraces her culture so much and how she makes it such a huge part of her music. I’m glad there are still artists out there that stick to who they really are and where they’ve come from. It’s pretty refreshing, and that’s why I love her. She never disappoints.

And seriously, how amazing does she look in this video “XXXO” from her new album Maya? She’s one hot mom if you ask me. I’d love to have a mom as cool as M.I.A., wouldn’t you?
